This week’s research wrap-up: Stroke papers from the Florey last week

One of our researchers' papers compared dabigatran to aspirin after embolic stroke of unknown source.

Our researchers at the Florey have been busy working away to better understand stroke, and improve both acute stroke treatments and long-term stroke rehabilitation and recovery.

Here’s some of their research that was published last week:

·      The RE-SPECT ESUS study with Prof Vincent Thijs: dabigatran was found to be no better than aspirin to prevent stroke in someone who has already had an embolic stroke of unknown origin. Read more in the New England Journal of Medicine.

·      Stroke123 with Prof Dominique Cadilhac, Prof Geoff Donnan, and Dr Monique Kilkenny: Financial incentives, workshops, and other quality improvement interventions were found to improve stroke care. The study used data from the Australian Stroke Clinical Registry. Read more in Stroke.

·      A nurse-initiated intervention with Prof Dominique Cadilhac. The intervention, which has previously had success in stroke units was trialled in emergency departments, was found not to affect patient outcomes or clinician behaviour. Read more in Stroke.

·      Second Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation Roundtable with Prof Julie Bernhardt, Dr Karen Borschmann, and Dr Kate Hayward: Last year’s roundtable set 4 major goals to accelerate development and implementation of breakthrough treatments for stroke recovery. Read more about them, and how we can attain them, in the International Journal of Stroke.

·      Framingham Study with Dr Matthew Pase: Rates of ischaemic stroke declined over time, especially in older adults. Read more in Stroke.

·      Researchers from the Dementia theme at the Florey found larger choroid plexus volumes in the brain in the chronic stages of stroke. Read more in the International Journal of Stroke.

·      An international team with Dr Kate Hayward quantified upper limb use after stroke during inpatient rehabilitation. Read more in Physiotherapy Research International.
